Recently, as part of a broader energy renovation initiative, the Alte Oper unveiled a groundbreaking new lighting concept for its main concert hall. Spearheaded by renowned lighting experts and powered by cutting-edge ETC technology, this project redefines how historic spaces can integrate modern functionality with timeless beauty.
A Vision for Harmonious, Energy-Efficient Lighting
The new lighting design had clear goals: create an elegant, functional, and energy-efficient solution that complements the hall’s acoustics and architecture. The challenge was taken up by Peter Nicol Jüngermann, head of IB Lueger, whose lighting concept focused on blending two key lighting tones – warm white (1800 Kelvin) and cooler white (4000 Kelvin) – with dynamic colored lighting options. This setup allows the venue to craft tailored atmospheres for a variety of performances, from classical concerts to contemporary cultural events.
Flexibility and adaptability were essential, as the venue hosts a diverse lineup of performances. To implement the concept, IB Lueger turned to DTL Licht, architectural lighting specialists led by CEO Alfred Bergbauer. Leveraging their expertise, DTL Licht selected ETC’s innovative F-Drive and Navis systems to meet the project’s demanding requirements.
Respecting History While Embracing Innovation
As a protected historic space, the Alte Oper required a meticulous approach to installation. “This was a highly demanding project,” said Bergbauer. “The exceptional acoustics of the Alte Oper not only enhance performances but also impose unique challenges for lighting design and installation. Every technical solution had to respect these acoustics and the historical character of the venue.”
ETC’s DMX-controlled F-Drive system emerged as the ideal solution. Its centralized power supply, located in technical rooms, eliminates the need for converters and electrical components above the hall, significantly reducing fire risks. “F-Drive offers outstanding serviceability and safer operation,” Bergbauer explained. “Its plug-in cards make maintenance a breeze and minimize disruptions.” The result is a seamless blend of advanced technology and historical preservation.
The Navis fixtures, installed by EAB Elektroanlagenbau GmbH, were another cornerstone of the design. With 480 DMX-controlled systems in place, the Navis fixtures deliver stunningly high-quality light using TIR optics. Bergbauer highlighted their practicality: “They’re easy to install, simple to maintain, and can be dimmed smoothly – a crucial requirement for the Alte Oper.” Their versatility allows the venue to adapt its lighting to suit different performances, ensuring a perfect atmosphere for every event.
Bridging Past and Future
The response to the new lighting concept has been overwhelmingly positive. “The management at the Alte Oper is thrilled with how seamlessly modern lighting technology has been integrated into this historic venue,” Bergbauer noted. The innovative use of ETC’s F-Drive and Navis systems not only meets the highest technical standards but also enhances the architectural identity of the space.
This project is a shining example of how innovation can honor tradition. The Alte Oper Frankfurt now boasts a lighting system that harmonizes with its rich history while embracing the possibilities of the future – a testament to the power of thoughtful design and cutting-edge technology.
By blending historic preservation with state-of-the-art solutions, the Alte Oper continues to be a luminary in the cultural landscape, setting a new benchmark for performance venues worldwide.
