High End Systems Halcyon Platinum is lighting up the floor of the Paycom Center, home of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the recent champions of the 2025 NBA Finals. Josh Hannum, Toucan Productions’ Lighting Director for OKC Thunder, shares how Halcyon Platinum is enhancing viewer experience both in person and on broadcast.
With an often-packed arena, the Paycom Center needs fixtures that make an impact. Halcyon Platinum meets those needs, reaching 54,000 lumens and up to 70,000 lumens in boost mode. “Obviously, we needed something with a high output. And something that would punch when it’s hung 70 feet in the air. So, that played a huge role when selecting fixtures and Halcyon Platinum definitely punches,” says Hannum. The Paycom Center is now equipped with eight Halcyon Platinum fixtures used in a variety of applications, including player and team intros, pregame DJ and light shows, as well as Halftime performances.
Some of Hannum's favorite looks highlight the sharp projection and sheer power of Halcyon. Hannum says, “One of my favorite looks is a custom ‘OKC’ gobo in big block letters. During tip-off, we strobe them and run different chases. With Halcyon’s bright engine, we can blast them on the court and have everyone see them, even with the house lights on.”
Of course, with professional sports comes live broadcasting, which can lead to challenges in color rendering for the camera. Halcyon’s advanced CMY/CTO color mixing helps make sure the game looks as good at home as it does in person.
“I love the CTO filter. You can dial in any sort of white temperature you want.” Hannum continues, “That helped a lot during the playoffs when TV became an even bigger part of the games. Having that CTO in the mix looked so much better on skin tones. It’s a lot less harsh than your standard cool whites.”
In addition to the Halcyon Platinum fixtures, a rig of eight Halcyon Titanium fixtures was brought in for the championship trophy presentation at the Paycom Center. At first, Hannum wanted to use the Platinums he was familiar with, but the Titaniums quickly showed their power, despite their smaller size. Hannum says, “I didn’t know if I was going to have enough fuel power with the Titanium, but they proved their worth and ended up being even more than we needed."
The Halcyon Platinum is designed to be a true workhorse. Beyond its incredible brightness and advanced feature set, the flagship family has staying power, too. Hannum describes the reliability of Halcyon, saying, “They’re pretty bulletproof. During the season, we didn’t have to do any maintenance because it wasn’t necessary.”
